Are You Afraid of the Light?

This year, the entire Wesleyan denomination has decided to promote reading the Bible through in 2006. Each week, our church has asked people in the congregation to write a short devotional for the next week’s reading and then they distribute them in the bulletin on Sunday. This week was my turn, and I thought I’d share:

P.S. Happy Mother’s Day!

Are You Afraid of the Light?

As a child, there are specific times I can remember being completely afraid of the dark. Or maybe, not so much the dark, but what I thought was IN the dark. The most memorable is when I was around 7 or 8 years old and had just watched the Gremlins movie for the first time. I was convinced that there were gremlins underneath my bed for at least a week.

I’m sure if you think hard enough, you could remember a time when you were afraid of the dark as well. But, how many of you have ever been afraid of the light?
In this week’s reading, the passage that stuck out the most was at the end of the week in John 3:19-21. It reads:

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”

There was also a time in my life when Satan used pornography to lure me into the dark. He had me convinced that by committing my sin in the dark, hidden from others, that I wasn’t hurting anyone. But there was always a fear that my “deeds would be exposed”. Fortunately, I came to a point when I realized that Satan was deceiving me into thinking that my sin only affected me when, in reality, it was affecting every aspect of my life - from my mood, to my personal relationship with the Lord as well as family and friends.

Maybe you are in a situation where you’re afraid of your sin coming into the light. Maybe it’s pornography, maybe it’s something else, but whatever it is, you need to put all pride aside, and walk back into the light. At first it may be blinding, causing you to want to turn back around, but remember, it is only when you are in His light, that He will use you to shine that light to others around us.

How bright would it be if we were all in the light?
