With all the hype surrounding this movie while it was in the theatre, as soon as I saw it available at our local Movie Gallery, I had to pick it up.  Honestly, I really had no idea (as I would assume was the case for most) what this movie was going to be about.  Jessi asked the usual, "it's not demonic is it?".  A fair question considering the previews were never clear as to whether it was a horror movie, or a sci-fi.  I found it to be a drama.  A very GOOD drama, I might add.  And let me just apologize now for the length of this review.  :)

Let's just say I'll rank this one up there with the top movies I've seen for plenty of reasons, but more due to my own personal taste in movies.  You may agree or disagree, but you're not writing this, are you?  ;)That said, on to the movie.

I guess I'll have to start off by mentioning what I DIDN'T like about this movie.  It, as more and more mainstream media movies and tv shows alike are doing, displayed homosexuality as something that should be embraced.  It makes me wonder.  Is there some "gay" group out there paying a large sum of money to get their message across, or are all these producers, writers, and the like, all really THAT pro-gay?  My guess is that it's PRO "against the norm".  Viva la revolution!  What isn't the norm should be celebrated.  Why?  Probably because this is America.  The land of the Free.  For as long as God is with us.

But I digress.  Without giving too much away, but with giving you adequate story line, the basics of this movie are simple.  It's set in futuristic Britain where the government rules the people in a way that can only be likened to a very polished Hitler. The "government" is portrayed as right-wing conservatists gone mad.  Forcing (by fear) the entire country to believe as they do, to fear God, and to abolish such things as homosexuality by apparently killing them off.

Back on the soapbox.  While watching this movie, I was very against the whole "tolerance" theme, but was frightened by how closely this government aligned with how many Christians and churches take on sinners.  Take homosexuality, for example (since we're already on the topic).  We all agree ("we" as in Bible-believing Christians) that it is clearly stated in the Bible that homosexuality is a sin.  However, nowhere does it say that we are to treat homosexuals as rejects, or continuously damn them.  Yet, many in the Christian world would rather stand on the street corner with a sign reading, "God created Adam and Eve, NOT Adam and Steve!" than EVER - gasp - treat them as equals - as sinners, just like you and I.  My personal view on homosexuality (as with any other sin) is that we're all born with the inclination to carry out our lives any way we choose.  We have the free will to sin as we wish - regardless of our knowledge of sin or the Bible.  Homosexuality isn't a disease.  It isn't leprosy - something that can't be touched.  It's a result of the fallen world we live in.  I believe there is no, one, concrete reason a person becomes or tests the waters as a homosexual, but that there are many Satan uses to disillusion someone into thinking it's ok - even in the Christian world.  This doesn't automatically make them a sinner worse than you or I.  This makes them a sinner.  A sinner who needs love, compassion, understanding, and yes, someone to tell them the truth - but in a loving way.  Maybe if we tried showing these things, instead of unabashed hatred and disgust, things would be different.  Maybe there wouldn't be such a push for homosexuality to be mainstream - almost as a rebellion.  I wonder if the woman at the well would ever had even came close to it if Jesus was holding a sign that read, "God Hates Whores!".  I, myself, have been guilty of treating others as less than equal at times, but I pray that I will always be able to see them as through the eyes of Christ not as a modern-day Pharisee.

Anyway, again, back to the movie.  There is a man that attempts to overthrow this government, and give the power back to the people.  This man is, V.  He has a vendetta. As far as the acting in the movie, almost everyone is superb.  The characters are well portrayed.  As with any movie like this, it involves your brain quite a bit.  Especially at the beginning.  Most of the storyline is fast-paced, which means you have to pay attention.  This isn't an easy task at times, because V speaks so eloquently and curiously all in the same breath.

Final thoughts?  Jessi fell asleep about a third of the way into it, but if you like "mind-dramas" and can handle a small amount of gore (from a very cool scene with V's sword), you should see this movie.  It gets you thinking - which is always good for the brain.

P.S.  If you've already seen the movie, you know it would never really happen.  Just like in high-school when everyone wants to boycott the teacher, but you're the only one walking out the door.  Yeah. Just like that.
